Lisa on her Clinical Experience

"I really don’t like the word 'pathologist' in our professional title.  I believe it sends a message that we are ‘pathologizing’ our clients, students, or patients.  Instead, I like to think that what we do is help scaffold speech, language or communication abilities that these people already possess in different ways. I believe we are present in these people’s lives to teach or give them the tools and strategies to be better communicators for different reasons.

Designing individualized lessons should stem from the child's interests and afford many opportunities to build language. When I was an AAC practitioner, I asked 'What can I do that will provide the aided communicator with a way to narrate, direct, plan or question?' I consider aided language input as a means to scaffold language development for social communication."
